1986 USFL Kickoff Opening Weekend

Bandits Defense Dominates as Tampa Bay Grinds Out Win Over Oklahoma

The Tampa Bay Bandits opened their 1986 USFL season with a methodical 26-17 victory over the Oklahoma Outlaws, relying on a stifling defense and a steady ground game. Kicker Zenon Andrusyshyn was perfect on the night, drilling four field goals—including a 49-yarder—while quarterback John Reaves tossed two touchdown passes to help Tampa Bay build a commanding 16-0 lead in the first half. The Outlaws struggled offensively, with quarterback Rick Johnson throwing four interceptions and the running game mustering just 10 yards on 14 carries.

Oklahoma showed brief signs of life in the second half, with Johnson connecting with Al Williams for two touchdown passes, including a late 15-yard score as time expired. However, the Outlaws’ offense was otherwise stifled, converting just 1 of 13 third downs and failing to sustain drives. Tampa Bay’s defense was relentless, recording four takeaways and holding Oklahoma to just 189 total yards. Linebacker Brian Hall and safety Brett Clark each snagged interceptions, while the defensive front consistently disrupted Johnson in the pocket.

Despite three turnovers of their own, the Bandits controlled the clock (40:54 time of possession) and leaned on running back Gary Anderson, who racked up 86 rushing yards and six catches. Reaves managed the game efficiently, spreading the ball to multiple receivers, including Marvin Harvey, whose 10-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter helped seal the win. The Outlaws, now 0-1, will need to address their offensive woes, while Tampa Bay’s balanced attack and defensive dominance make them an early team to watch in the USFL.
