Outlaws Ride Johnson’s Arm, Opportunistic Defense to Season-Opening Win
On a warm Friday night in Tulsa, the Oklahoma Outlaws kicked off their 1986 USFL campaign with a 27-13 victory over the San Antonio Gunslingers, fueled by a balanced offensive attack and key defensive plays. Quarterback Rick Johnson delivered a poised performance, completing 15 of 30 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns—including a 16-yard strike to Al Williams on Oklahoma’s opening scoring drive. The Outlaws’ defense stole the spotlight just before halftime when linebacker Copeland scooped up a fumble and rumbled 40 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 21-0 and swinging momentum firmly in Oklahoma’s favor.
San Antonio struggled to find rhythm early, with quarterback David Norrie under constant pressure (five sacks) and the running game stifled (68 yards on 24 carries). The Gunslingers finally broke through in the fourth quarter, as Norrie connected with Michael McDade and Don Roberts for late touchdown passes, but the comeback bid fell short. Oklahoma’s defense forced three turnovers, including two interceptions, while kicker John Lee added two field goals—including a 47-yarder—to keep San Antonio at bay.
Despite a late surge from the Gunslingers, the Outlaws controlled the clock and capitalized on mistakes, improving to 1-1 on the young season. Johnson’s efficient play and a stifling defensive effort proved decisive, while San Antonio’s penalties (11 for 90 yards) and missed opportunities haunted them in their season opener. With the win, Oklahoma gains early momentum, while the Gunslingers will look to clean up their mistakes ahead of Week 2.
