Boston Breakers 42, Washington Federals 39

Breakers Edge Federals in Thriller, Remain Undefeated

On a brisk Sunday afternoon at RFK Memorial Stadium, the Boston Breakers staved off a furious Washington comeback to escape with a 42–39 victory and improve to 3–0 on the season. Boston quarterback Matt Dunigan was brilliant, tossing four touchdown passes and running for another en route to MVP honors. Dunigan’s favorite target was wideout Brown, who hauled in five catches for 105 yards and three scores, including a back-breaking 53-yard strike late in the third quarter.

Washington, despite trailing by as many as 18 points, showed resilience behind the arm of quarterback Mike Honensee. He threw for 387 yards and four touchdowns, including two to wide receiver Harris, who notched a career-best 170 receiving yards on 13 catches. Running back Steve Sewell chipped in with 112 yards on the ground, a rushing touchdown, and another score through the air. The Federals won the time of possession battle by more than 11 minutes and converted an impressive 13 of 18 third downs, but two costly turnovers and a key missed two-point conversion proved to be the difference.

Down 42–31 with under three minutes to play, Washington mounted one final drive—an exhausting 16-play march capped by Honensee’s second touchdown pass to Sewell. The ensuing onside kick failed, and Boston successfully ran out the clock. Despite the loss, Washington proved it could hang with one of the league’s top teams, while the Breakers continued their strong start thanks to timely execution and big plays in all three phases.
