Blitz Snow Under Gunslingers with Balanced Attack, 28–14
On a frigid afternoon at Soldier Field, with flurries dusting the field and temperatures never climbing out of the twenties, the Chicago Blitz delivered a hard-nosed, turnover-free performance to notch their first win of the season in a 28–14 victory over the visiting San Antonio Gunslingers. After falling behind early, Chicago stormed back with 28 unanswered points thanks to efficient quarterback play from Chuck Long and a workhorse effort on the ground from Spencer.
San Antonio opened the scoring with a clock-chewing 14-play drive capped by George Works’ four-yard plunge, but the Blitz took command from there. Long found Willis for a 30-yard strike to even the game, and Spencer’s one-yard touchdown dive late in the second quarter gave Chicago a lead they never relinquished. Spencer finished with 111 yards on 27 carries and also caught a touchdown, while Long completed 15 of 20 passes for 228 yards, two scores, and no interceptions. Kicker Coral added a pair of third-quarter field goals as Chicago padded their cushion.
The Gunslingers moved the ball effectively, totaling 334 yards and 25 first downs, but costly mistakes doomed their efforts. Quarterback David Norrie threw two second-half interceptions, and San Antonio lost four fumbles—two of which were recovered by the Blitz defense. Jerry Gordon’s 17-yard touchdown reception in the final minutes made the score more respectable, but it was too little, too late. With the win, Chicago improves to 1–2 in the Central Division, while San Antonio drops to 1–2 and faces a critical stretch ahead if they hope to stay in the playoff hunt.
