Pittsburgh Maulers 10, Memphis Showboats 42

Dateline: Sunday, March 9, 1986. Memphis ran all over Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon for the win. Literally. Thomas Sanders, a largely unknown running back, gained 262 yards and scored two touchdowns. Topper Clemmons added another 64 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The win comes as Memphis’s first on the season.

Pittsburgh’s woes continue. Now the lone winless team, they’ve been outscored by a pace of over 2 to 1. They managed less than 300 yards in the game, including 27 on the ground. Their only touchdown came in the form of a Jim Karsatos pass in garbage time when the game was long over.

Both teams face another tough test on the road next week; Memphis at Houston and Pittsburgh plays Boston.
