Dateline: Sunday, March 17, 1986. The Houston Gamblers improved to 5-1 and took their regular place at the top of the Midwest division Sunday afternoon in the Astrodome. They rushed out to leads of 24-0 and 38-3 before Memphis showed any signs of life. Quarterback Kent Austin kept the Showboats from getting blown out, throwing 3 straight touchdown passes in the fourth.
But, former league MVP Jim Kelly threw three of his own. The usually immobile Kelly also scrambled 17 yards for a touchdown. Likewise, Andrew Lazarus ran for 131 yards and the Gamblers don’t even seem to miss Fowler, who they traded to Oklahoma last week.
The Showboats have a bye next week while Houston travels to Jacksonville.
