Los Angeles Express 21, Birmingham Stallions 28

Dateline: Sunday, April 27, 1986. In the marquee matchup of the week, Birmingham edged Los Angeles at home Sunday night to stay at the top of their division. Quarterback Cliff Stoudt threw a touchdown pass with four minutes left, his 4th of the game, to break the tie. The Birmingham defense then took over, intercepting two passes on the last two Express drives.

Running back Eric Dickerson made up for Frank Seurer’s mediocre game by running for 202 yards. It wasn’t enough, though, as Seurer threw 4 interceptions, including the two costly ones at the end of the game. This puts Dickerson in the lead for rushing yards and sets up a possible rivalry for the ages with Herschel Walker if both players remain in the league.

Los Angeles travels to Tampa. Birmingham goes to Oklahoma next week.
