Dateline: Sunday, May 11, 1986. Washington survived against the Maulers on Sunday afternoon to move to 4-9 and, at least for now, a game ahead of Pittsburgh in the race to the bottom of the division. They won through a punishing ground game (204 total yards and a touchdown) and four field goals from their kicker
Pittsburgh quarterback Mike Tomczak continued his decent play in spite of Pittsburgh’s running troubles. Their leading rusher gained only 36 yards. Tomczak, himself, only threw for 187 yards. However, he threw for Pittsburgh’s two touchdowns, their only points in the game.
Both teams are on the road in division battles next week. Pittsburgh goes to Philly. Washington takes on the Generals in New Jersey.
