1985 Season – Growing Pains
While the USFL showed that not all expansion teams flounder (see Houston), both teams who joined the league in 1985 suffered some growing pains. New Orleans sported a better record in the league in a tougher division. However, their quarterback play was spotty and they never established much of a run game, either.
Their defense, on the field for extended periods of time in most games, picked up big numbers in the stats department. Ultimately, though, they gave up a league high 564 points and were a definite weak point on the team. The low point came during a 59-7 thumping by the Birmingham Stallions.
The season wasn’t without some positives, though. The team won 4 games, got a shutout against the Denver Gold, and they have a season under their belt. The Brass hope to rebound from their first season and improve in every facet of the game in 1986.
