Gunslingers Ride Roberts’ Big Day to 38-16 Rout Over Winless Maulers
The San Antonio Gunslingers improved to 2-1 with a commanding 38-16 victory over the Pittsburgh Maulers at the Alamodome, led by MVP Don Roberts’ three-touchdown performance. Roberts proved unstoppable, rushing for 76 yards and two scores while adding seven receptions for 88 yards and another touchdown through the air. Quarterback David Norrie was surgical in his efficiency, completing 14 of 18 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, as the Gunslingers scored on five of their first six possessions to build a commanding 21-9 halftime lead.
Pittsburgh (0-3) showed flashes of offensive life, with quarterback Jim Karsatos connecting with Greg Flowers for a 63-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 21-16. However, three costly interceptions – including two in the fourth quarter – doomed any comeback hopes. Running back Mike Rozier managed 91 rushing yards but lost two fumbles, as the Maulers’ red zone struggles continued with three Steve Jordan field goals being their only rewards from six trips inside the 20-yard line. San Antonio’s defense, led by Steve Jarecki’s 10 tackles and three different players recording interceptions, consistently made big plays when needed.
The win keeps San Antonio in the thick of the Western Conference race, showcasing an offense that converted 6-of-10 third downs and scored touchdowns on all three red zone opportunities. For Pittsburgh, the search for their first win continues as turnovers (three) and missed opportunities in scoring territory proved their undoing once again. Roberts’ all-purpose dominance (164 total yards, 3 TDs) and Norrie’s mistake-free performance give the Gunslingers momentum heading into Week 4, while the Maulers must regroup quickly to salvage their season after another disappointing performance.
