Birmingham Stallions

Birmingham Stallions – Stampede to Glory

“Iron City. Iron Will.”

The Birmingham Stallions charged into the USFL in 1983 as one of the league’s flagship franchises, bringing professional football back to a football-crazed southern city. Under the leadership of head coach Rollie Dotsch, a no-nonsense tactician with a reputation for building hard-nosed teams, the Stallions quickly established an identity: physical running attacks, disciplined defense, and a blue-collar work ethic mirroring Birmingham’s steel-town roots.

  • Record: 10-8 (3rd in Southern Division)
  • Key Players: RB Joe Cribbs (USFL star signing), QB Reggie Collier (dual-threat rookie), LB Thomas Boyd (defensive anchor).
  • Season Highlights:
    • Swept the Bandits in both division games.
    • Finished strong with 3 straight wins..
  • Legacy: A promising debut—close but not quite elite.

With a year of experience, Dotsch doubled down on the ground game, and the Stallions emerged as a true contender. The Birmingham-Tampa Bay rivalry became must-watch football, defined by brutal defensive stands and last-minute heroics.

  • Record: 13-5 (2nd in Southern Division)
  • Key Additions: WR Jim Smith (veteran deep threat), DE Dave Pureifory (pass rush boost).
  • Season Highlights:
    • Crushed the Tampa Bay Bandits 76-21 to close out the season.
    • Scored 50 points or more three times
  • Playoffs:
    • First Round: Dominated Tampa Bay (30-27)—revenge served cold.
    • Conference Championship: Lost a heartbreaker to the New Jersey Generals (20-17).
  • Legacy: So close. The Stallions were now a team no one wanted to face in the playoffs.

The Stallions entered the year with championship expectations, but the road got tougher. The USFL expanded, divisions realigned, and Birmingham faced a gauntlet schedule. Still, they delivered another stellar campaign.

  • Record: 13-5 (2nd in Southern Division, again behind Tampa)
  • Key Additions: LB John Corker (All-USFL defender), OT Pat Phenix (O-line stability).
  • Season Highlights:
  • Blew out Boston 42-28 for their first win of the season.
  • Finished out the season with 6 straight wins, then 2 more in the playoffs.
  • Playoffs:
  • First Round: Ground down the Pittsburgh Maulers (24-17) in a slugfest.
  • Second Round: Smothered the New Jersey Generals (21-10), exorcising demons.
  • Eastern Finals: Lost 30-27 to Tampa Bay after a late Bandits field goal—another brutal exit.
  • Legacy: So close to the title game. The core was still young, but the window felt urgent.
