February 1986 — PRESEASON WRAP-UP
HEADLINE: GENERALS ROAR THROUGH PRESEASON, EYES SET ON ’86 TITLE RUN
Record: 3-1 (W vs. Chicago, San Antonio, Oklahoma | L @ – Denver)
OFFENSIVE REPORT: WALKER & CARTHON STILL A TWO-HEADED MONSTER
- Herschel Walker picked up right where he left off, bulldozing defenses for 303 yards and 3 TDs in limited carries. His 85-yard sprint against Oklahoma was a reminder: He’s still the most feared back in football.
- Maurice Carthon added 196 yards and a TD, proving the Generals’ ground game remains unstoppable.
- Doug Flutie had a shaky preseason (1 TD, 2 INTs), but fans shouldn’t panic—his magic shines when it matters. Expect him to air it out Week 1.
DEFENSIVE STAND: TURNOVER MACHINE IS BACK
- The defense forced 6 INTs and racked up 9 sacks, with Kerry Justin and Bobby Leopold leading the charge. Denver exposed some gaps in the secondary, but this unit looks playoff-ready.
COACH’S CORNER: WALT MICHAELS’ PRESEASON TAKE
“We’re not here to win January. We’re here to win July. Flutie’s fine, Herschel’s Herschel, and the defense? They’re hungry.”
FAN ZONE: THE CHANT IS HERE!
The Legion’s new battle cry is sweeping training camp—get ready to shout it at Giants Stadium:
🎙️ “FLOO-TIE’S FLIGHT!” (clap-clap)
🎙️ “WAL-KER’S MIGHT!” (clap-clap)
🎙️ “VIC-TO-RY!”
🎙️ “IN OUR SIGHT!”
(Repeat 2x, then scream:) “GENERALS—CHARGE!”
👉 BE THERE: First chance to roar it live—Season Opener at the Jacksonville Bulls during the 1986 kickoff weekend!
FINAL WORD: TITLE OR BUST
The preseason proved two things:
- This team runs through Herschel—but Flutie must deliver in big moments.
- The defense can carry them if the offense sputters.
Legion’s Prediction: 12-4, Atlantic Division champs, and FINALLY a USFL trophy.
