1986 USFL Kickoff Opening Weekend

Herschel Walker Dominates as Generals Outlast Bulls in High-Scoring Shootout

The New Jersey Generals opened their 1986 USFL campaign with a thrilling 44-35 victory over the Jacksonville Bulls, powered by a historic performance from Herschel Walker. The star running back rushed for 254 yards and a staggering six touchdowns, setting the tone for a back-and-forth battle in Jacksonville. Despite an early 14-7 deficit, the Generals exploded for 24 second-quarter points, with Walker scoring three times in the period alone, giving New Jersey a commanding 31-14 halftime lead.

Jacksonville fought back behind quarterback Ed Luther, who threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Larry Mason. The Bulls chipped away at the deficit with two third-quarter field goals and a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, cutting the lead to 38-35 late in the game. However, Walker sealed the win with his sixth and final score—a 1-yard plunge—with just 1:50 remaining. The Generals’ defense came up big late, intercepting Luther twice, including a game-clinching pick by John Preston in the final minute.

The game was a showcase of offensive firepower, with both teams combining for nearly 900 total yards. Walker’s heroics earned him MVP honors, while Jacksonville’s Cedric Jones added 145 rushing yards and a touchdown in the losing effort. The Bulls’ comeback bid fell short due to turnovers and missed opportunities, as New Jersey’s ground game proved unstoppable. With this win, the Generals start the season 1-0, while Jacksonville will look to regroup after a hard-fought defeat.
